An Interactive Essay · For the World

For the world.

What is a church for, in a city like New York? The conviction that the church is for the world — and not merely for its own — runs the length of Scripture, from God's call to Abraham through John's vision of the new city. Between those bookends, the church is given three blessings to receive and to extend: a greater significance, a greater teaching, and a greater glory. Each addresses a barrier earthly life cannot overcome on its own.

The Earthly City

Boundless opportunity.

Exposure, openness, ambition. But also relentless performance, striving, and the demand for self-creation. Diverse but anonymous. Crowded but unrooted. The city offers opportunity; it cannot offer restoration.

The City on a Hill

A different kind of city.

Refuge, formation, healing. Rest and grace at the center, not striving. The deep unity of every tribe and tongue under a single King — a community visibly distinct, lit from within, set high enough to be seen.

Three blessings.

God's mission to bless all peoples is executed through three expanding realities, all made possible by the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Click each blessing to explore.

III · The Cost

Costly to him.
Free to us.

Each of the three blessings comes to us freely. We do not earn them. We cannot earn them. But they were not free to him. The blessing is free to us. It was infinitely costly to him.

Because of his sacrifice, it is finally safe to step out from the shadows of your history and trust him.
